FACEBOOK VS FLICKR

March 6, 2007 · 11 Comments

Why would you purchase a flickr account if you can get the exact same service, free of charge, from Facebook? Sure, flickr might have some extra bits & pieces, but I don’t think the average person is really to worried about the differences.

Facebook gives you unlimited photo space, free of charge & flickr charges $24.75 annually for that.

Can anyone explain to me why this is? And also, is there a 3rd party program or web-app that makes it possible to download all your flickr photos directly to facebook?

Flickr and Facebook’s photo features differ in so many ways.

    Flickr
    1. Allows for easier sharing of photos on other sites.
    2. Better tagging that Facebook, although it is nice to tag the people in the photo on Facebook.
    3. Flickr is a site for photos, it allows people to socially interact socially by creating groups for certain types of photos. Allowing for example people who are into bird watching to pool all their photos into one group so everyone can enjoy them, tag them and share them.
    5. People don’t need to register to view your photos.

    Facebook
    1. Facebook doesn’t focus / promote on photo sharing outside of its own domain.
    2. The people tagging feature is enough.
    3. People need to register in order to view your photos.
    4. Facebook more geared to people socially networking rather than sharing photos

Yes they both allow you to print photos but this is like saying why use YouTube when MySpace also offers a video service. Flickr and YouTube are focused on the niche they are each in while Facebook and MySpace tap into a lot of areas which are crucial to their expansion and maintaining their current user base by offering them features which allow them to upload photos or videos.

Top notch comment there Tyler. I use both Flickr and Facebook, and I must say they both offer quite different solutions. In fact, I recently purchased a Flickr Pro account.

Facebook is great for its social networking capabilities. All my mates are on it. Flickr on the other hand focuses more on its guaranteed photo storage facilities, it’s more for people serious about photography.

I think a better comparison would be Myspace vs Facebook.

BTW I see you come up in first place when “Facebook vs Flickr” or “Flickr vs Facebook” is entered into Google.

Bet that is driving some traffic. Congrats.

    Tyler is comparison king!
I agree with you, they serve different purposes and therefore have different information being sent to you when you login.
Facebook is focused on the people behind the foto’s, Flickr is interested in the photo’s.

Just want to add a couple of points…

Flickr allows you to upload a photo, restrict it’s viewability but still be able to link to it via a unique url. Great for when linking to images when on forums etc

Also, and this is certainly my biggest plus point, you can have your full res photo in flickr but facebook will resize them no matter what.

It isn’t exactly as functional or a 1:1 mapping to the Flickr public sharing feature, but Facebook does now let you send a public link to your photos, which doesn’t require logging in or being friends, etc.
