If i create a .com I loose PR, which is not the end of the world, but is it really more beneficial to have a .com?

Depends on what you want to do with the domain…

Why not both? They’re not that expensive.

I like .com personally – just rings better!

.com backbone is more reliable than .co.za. There have been a few DNS issues with .co.za recently and I can’t see it improving in the near future

Justin – I totally agree with you, I don’t know if it is worth the trouble. Not yet anyway, I could always place a redir on a .com at a later stage.
mc721221 – Serious? I have never experienced any noticeable issues on my .co.za.

I agree with Rafiq – depends on what you want to do with it. But I’ve found that .com does have marketing value.

I know you have already made the decision, but FWIW, there are SEO advantages both ways, depending on what audience you want. Also, it depends on whether you want to stress that “Local is Lekker”, or create an “international” feel. I register several of both types every year, depending on the need (and, of course, the availability). I have also registered some .net, .info, .org.za and other less common types for various reasons at various times.

PS: The .com registrars offer a plethora of services thrown in with the deal, which you don’t get with UniForum (the .co.za registrar), so usually if I have to make a quick decision, I pick a .com, just so that I can set up my DNS and related services all in one place.

I recommend .com. The .co.za domain will only last you as long as you want to remain catering for SA’n audience whereas the .com can be for any target audience.
I’d take the plunge, and as mentioned, the cost difference it minimal.
